One of the most important lessons we've learned while building Lavender Lane Farm™ is that healthy plants depend on preparation just as much as they do on sunshine and rain.
Although Mother Nature has been generous with rainfall this season, we know that won't always be the case. That's why we decided to install a drip irrigation system throughout our lavender rows before it was ever needed.
Unlike traditional sprinklers, drip irrigation delivers water slowly and directly to the base of each plant, where it's needed most. This approach helps conserve water, reduces evaporation, and keeps excess moisture off the foliage—an important consideration for growing healthy lavender.
Installing the drip lines was another exciting milestone because it means we're ready for whatever the weather brings next. Even though the system hasn't needed to provide much water yet, it's reassuring to know that every plant can receive consistent moisture during extended dry periods.
For now, the frequent rains have done most of the work for us. We've continued monitoring rainfall, checking soil moisture, and watching how the raised planting mounds drain after each storm. So far, the results have been encouraging, giving us confidence that the time spent preparing the mounds, landscape fabric, and irrigation system is paying off.
Like every step in this journey, installing the drip irrigation wasn't just about today—it was about investing in the future health of our lavender fields. Sometimes the best preparation is the work you hope you won't need right away.
We'll continue keeping a close eye on the weather, the soil, and our growing lavender. And when the dry days eventually arrive, we'll be ready.
